Origin

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Baron Mordo first appeared in Strange Tales #111 (August 1963). In Marvel continuity he was a student of the Ancient One in Tibet whose plot to kill the Ancient One was foiled by Dr. Stephen Strange; Mordo was exiled from the Ancient One's tutelage and later pursued power by making deals with extradimensional and infernal entities such as Dormammu and by selling his soul to Mephisto and Satannish. He reappears across comic arcs and adaptations as an antagonist to Strange and a seeker of powerful magical knowledge and artifacts.

Appearance

Sources describe Mordo as a Transylvanian nobleman and human practitioner of the mystic arts who appears throughout comics, animation, and film adaptations. Specific consistent physical details (height, clothing colors) are not provided in the supplied materials; adaptations include portrayals in animated series and live-action films (noted in summaries of media appearances).

Abilities

Mordo is described as possessing vast magical abilities gained from years of studying the mystic arts, with particular facility in what sources call the "black arts." Abilities attributed to him include summoning demons (though he has at times lacked sufficient power to control them), astral projection (separating his astral form from his body), hypnotism and mesmerism, illusion casting, projection of magical force blasts, interdimensional teleportation, manipulation of various magical energies, and an extensive knowledge of magical lore; he also has some knowledge of a karate-like martial art. Narratively he is willing to employ demonic or infernal means that other practitioners (such as Doctor Strange) eschew.
