Scientific-discovery and taxonomic history: Pallas's cat was first described to Western science by Peter Simon Pallas in 1776 from specimens near Lake Baikal. Historically placed in Felis as Felis manul, it has since been studied and reclassified as Otocolobus manul; 19th- and 20th-century taxonomic names and descriptions (for example Felis nigripectus for Himalayan material and O. m. ferrugineus for an erythristic specimen) reflect specimen-based variation and the history of zoological exploration in Asia. Modern genetic and taxonomic work recognizes population structure and, since 2017, two subspecies are often distinguished (O. m. manul and O. m. nigripectus). The English common name "Pallas's cat" commemorates the naturalist P. S. Pallas; William Thomas Blanford coined the common name in honor of Pallas.
About the size of a domestic cat, Pallas's cat has a head-and-body length around 46–65 cm with a tail 21–31 cm long and a weight typically 2.5–4.5 kg in described accounts. It is stocky with short legs and a long, very bushy tail. Fur is long and dense—underfur up to ~40 mm with guard hairs reported as long as 69 mm and extreme hair densities cited—giving a stout, plush winter appearance. Overall coloration is light grey with pale yellowish-ochre or reddish tints; forehead and crown are light grey with small black spots, two black zigzag cheek lines from eye corners to jaw, five to seven narrow black transverse stripes across the lower back, and a grey tail with seven narrow black rings and a black tip. The skull is rounded with a short nasal bone; ears are rounded and set low on the sides of the head, and the eyes are encircled by white with a yellowish iris.
Described in natural-history sources as an ecologically specialized small felid: it inhabits rocky montane grasslands and shrublands where snow cover is typically below about 15–20 cm, and uses caves, rock crevices and marmot burrows for shelter. Pallas's cat is solitary and preys primarily on rodents and lagomorphs, relying on camouflage and stealth in open, sparsely vegetated terrain. It is well adapted to cold continental climates, showing denser, greyer winter pelage with less visible markings; reproductive timing observed in sources reports females giving birth to two to six kittens in spring. Human-related behaviors recorded in captive settings include scent-marking by males (urine spraying observed in a captive group). Conservation and management activities (captive breeding, rehabilitation, artificial shelters) are used to support populations rather than as cultural rites.
Weaknesses
- conditionvulnerability to prey-base decline from rodent-control programs
- conditionthreats from habitat fragmentation (mining, infrastructure) and poaching
Wards
- otherconservation measures (artificial shelters, rehabilitation centers, captive-breeding programs)
